Synopsis
Zahara, a stateless refugee, lives on a small remote island in Malaysia, where she makes a living selling turtle eggs. One day, Samad, claiming to be a university researcher, visits the island, wanting to employ Zahara to show him around. As the day goes on, Zahara and Samad become entangled in a dangerous dance of duplicity and deception.

Woo Ming Jin has the distinction of being the only Malaysian director to have his films screened in Cannes, Berlin and Venice film festivals. His first film Monday Morning Glory (2005) screened at the Berlin International Film Festival, while his second, Elephant and the Sea (2007), won awards in Torino, Cinema Digital Seoul, Portugal and Spain film festivals. Woman on Fire Looks for Water (2009) premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, and has played in Pusan, Rotterdam, Los Angeles and the Pompidou Center in Paris, among many others. The Tiger Factory (2010), premiered at the Director’s Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival, and won the Special Jury Mention at the Tokyo Film Festival in 2010. The Second Life of Thieves (2014), premiered at the Busan and Rotterdam International Film Festivals and has been supported by the Hubert Bals Fund of Rotterdam, and the Vision Sud Est fund. Ming Jin is also a producer of many award winning films, notably Aqerat (We, The Dead) in 2017 that was the winner of Best Director and Newcomer Actress at the Tokyo International Film Festival, and Barbarian Invasion (2021), winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Shanghai Film Festival. His latest film, Stone Turtle (2022), played in Main Competition at the Locarno International FIlm Festival and won the Fipresci Prize (International Critics Prize). The film has won numerous awards at festivals in Montreal, Bali, and Portugal.
